Surgical removal of ileocecal valve

Has anyone out there had the ileocecal valve removed as part of a resection?
Most patients seem to suffer no ill effects from the removal of the valve,
whereas others suffer from prolonged bouts of diarrhea or perhaps other side
effects. Has anyone out there had any adverse reactions--long- or
short-term--to the removal of the valve?

Hi William,

My daughter had a resection with her ileocecal valve removed about a
month ago and has not had any problems as a result. When are you
having a resection?

I had my ileocecal valve removed as part of a resection a few years ago.
I still have problems with diarrhea. However, that could be due to the
length of small bowel I had removed as well, around a foot. I take
colestid to help firm things up, but it's not 100%. In fact, at the
moment I can't even take the colestid as I have a partial blockage, but
that's not related to your question. My experience is that it gets
better with time, your body just has to get used to the missing parts.

What he said, minus the colestid.

About 70% of my stools over the last three years have been firm, I had a
resection that took 30cm each way from the ileocaecal valve.

More of a problem is that the CD came back after a couple of years, if I
keep the inflammation to a dull burn it seems fine.

Most important is that the surgeon knows how to fashion a good
simulation of the valve when the small and large bowel are joined.

Cheers,

Hi William,

I had my ileocecal valve removed 6 months ago. Since I was diagonized
with Crohn's 17 years ago only my terminal illeum has been involved
about 5 cm. It was badly diseased, eventually developed a fistula to
the bladder. Feel great after the surgery, normal bowel movements.
Have to keep getting my B12 monitored due to the illeum section removed.
